As Dimension 20 gears up for the premiere of Misfits and Magic Season 2, fans are being treated to a magical array of behind-the-scenes content. With individual cast videos and an exciting recap, the stage is set for what promises to be an unreal return to the world of wayward wizardry.
The Misfits Return
Misfits and Magic Season 2 brings back the beloved cast from the first season:
- Aabria Iyengar as Game Master
- Lou Wilson as Whitney Jammer
- Brennan Lee Mulligan as Evan Kelmp
- Erika Ishii as Dream/K
- Danielle Radford as Sam Black/Britain
Remember how the first season was just four episodes (six if we count the specials)? Well, hold onto your sorting hats, because Season 2 is going all out with 11 episodes, and that’s not even counting any potential specials. More magic, more chaos, more everything!
“Capital ‘A’ adventure – we are on a quest, we are going to magical islands, we are finding out new things. It is captivating, it is so, so fun.” – Brennan Lee Mulligan
And hey, for you Worlds Beyond Number junkies out there – yep, this is the first time we’re seeing Aabria, Brennan, Erika, and Lou return all together since they started that podcast. Pretty cool, right?
Three Years Later…
So, we’re jumping ahead three years from where we left off in Season 1. Our gang of accidental magic users? They’re not just dealing with wizard school shenanigans anymore. Nope, now they’re navigating an entire world fraught with chaotic magic, not to mention the murky waters of young adulthood and first loves. Oh, and there’s some big magical crisis brewing too. Because of course there is.
Brennan Lee Mulligan on Evan Kelmp‘s return:
“Three intervening years have seen a chaos introduced into the nature of magic and the world. And the old order and rules of magic no longer can be relied. upon. Evan has not taken that well. And we see him working as kind of a magical errant gopher for Dr. Boodle, like running down magical artifacts and trying to fix what has been broken.”

Erika Ishii on K (aka Dream)’s return:
“K has graduated from Gowpenny. […] Coming back with a character that you thought you had built just this great succinct arc for and there was nothing left to revisit, was a challenge. Because then Aabriya asked, ‘Well what do you think she’s doing now? And what do you think they want to be doing by the end of this?’ And I had to sort of scramble. One thing that we discussed and definitely teased in the holiday special, was what happens after first love? There are such weighty stakes to it in terms of feelings and in terms of storytelling ’cause it really is special .“

Danielle Radford on Sam Black/Britain‘s return:
“Sam has now undergone another name change. Sam Britain, because she’s Sam and she lives in Britain. She has her own talk show on one of the BBCs called Britains Got Magic, and it’s just a sit-down talk show where she talks to all of her friends, famous friends. Sam has famous friends now, but she like does not know what to do with that. Some people around set have called it Sam’s charm bomb, she’s kinda got that Kamehameha, where she can like power up. Every creature seemingly everywhere knows who Sam is and greets her by name. And so, we were wondering like how we could bring that into a broader sense, and that is why now Sam is maybe a little more well known than she was.”

Lou Wilson on Whitney Jammer‘s return:
“The magical world is in tatters, but actually that doesn’t matter that much to my character because my character chose to leave Gowpenny. Jammer never graduated. He returned to his home in Chicago. He’s a sophomore at a D2 school playing basketball. […] I think there was a big part of me that’s like, “Well if we’re going to revisit Jammer, we have to hold the idea that going to Gowpenny was always like a lark.” Jammer went to Gowpenny because he thought it was a recruiting opportunity. So much of Jammer is a reflection of the space he grew up in. I think I had to honor that truth that Jammer is from the south side of Chicago, plays basketball, and happened to go to a magical school. And even as he goes on this next adventure, is trying to hold both these places, hold his friends, but also this community that has shaped and made him.”

Aabriya Iyengar on the return to the world of Misfits and Magic:
“Coming back to this season, it’s very much about who do you want to become now that the initial pressure is off. And we are picking up with a world that has seen the events of the epilogue from the original season come to fruition. K, and Evan, and Sam, and Jammer released the truth of magic into the world. And people that were regulated to NAMPs are now active magical persons if they choose to be. And that has broken magic in a really foundational way.”

Aabria’s Bag of Tricks
From what we’ve seen in the behind-the-scenes, Aabria‘s pulling out all the stops this season, and as always will be pushing the talents of Dimension 20‘s hearty crew to new heights. We have our own guesses as to what sorts of surprise goodies she’ll be giving out at the table this time around. She’s also once again utilized D20’s talented Carlos Luna to voice an NPC called Tabby that’s basically a talking tablet. I mean, come on, how great is that?
“I cannot play at Aabriya‘s table enough times. You cannot help but feel that everything you are doing as a player at her table is being seen and understood and will be remembered, for better or worse. Nobody rewards like Aabriya and no nobody gives consequences like Aabriya. She’s the best.” – Brennan Lee Mulligan
New Rules, Same School
They’re using this homebrew system called “Never Stop Making Magic” for Season 2. It’s like they smooshed together Dropout’s Never Stop System and Kids on Bikes. Sounds like it’ll let them get even wilder with the storytelling.
“Aabriya has invented some rules and moded some elements of the game that have been really engrossing. It has been a really lovely entry point into mechanizing this chaotic world of magic that we see before us. Elements of Never Stop Blowing Up have been added to the Kids on Brooms system by Hunters Entertainment“
“The magic die blows up and increases in value so you start at a d4 and your magic gets more and more powerful up to the point where it gets incredibly powerful, and then you are usually able to funnel it into creating a new artifact or talisman, a new piece of permanent magic and then your die resets into a d4.“
“Coming into this season, I think that we take some of the most beloved tropes of actual play in general and put then under a microscope and see the level of adventure that they can withstand.”
– Brennan Lee Mulligan

“If magic were real, I would use it to make everything perfect, solve all problems, including the ones in the past. Instead of bad things, there would be not only good things, but actually perfect things always forever for everyone maximally at all times. And to find out if that’s possible for these characters, you’ll just have to watch.” – Brennan Lee Mulligan
