Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.
This TTRPG show is set in a fictional turn-of-the-century inspired region known as The Fairelands, a place of terrifying magick. At the beginning of each episode, an inciting incident occurs, prompting a team, or circle, of investigators to uncover and solve the mystery at hand.
This means that it’s a completely standalone series – you can jump right in on whichever episode you’d like and don’t need to be caught up on any of our other content to enjoy the story.
Critical Role Blog Announcements
Candela Obscura will be a horror series that follows a group of player character investigators from an obscure order as they fight against an unrevealed BBEG. This first chapter will consist of 3 stand-alone episodes. Set in the fictional turn-of-the-century inspired region known as The Fairelands, this show is set to explore a world of gothic horrors and spooky magic in a way Critical Role has yet to do so before. But don’t be too worried, the series promises that it will not be overly scary, focusing more on the supernatural elements familiar with the horror genre. The series will premiere at 7 PM Pacific on the Critical Role Twitch and Youtube channels and will continue on the last Thursday of each month. The podcast and YouTube VOD versions of the show will be released two weeks after each episode airs.
This series will be the first from Critical Role’s Darrington Press Illuminated Worlds System. Curious about the Candela Obscura TTRPG the actual play will be using? While the core rulebook won’t be released until the end of 2023, Critical Role will be releasing a quickstart guide ahead of the series premiere that will provide some context to the rules, settings, and characters, and include an adventure you can run at your own tables! The quickstart will be released for free on Thursday, May 25th.
