Paws & Dragons: Celebrity Canines Conquer D&D for Charity

Star-Studded “Puppy Roll” Fetches Over $30,000 for Pet Welfare

In a tail-wagging triumph of imagination and goodwill, the tabletop gaming world witnessed an unprecedented spectacle on August 20, 2024. “The Puppy Roll,” a one-of-a-kind Dungeons & Dragons event, saw beloved voice actors embodying their furry companions in a fantastical romp that had audiences howling with delight—and opening their wallets for a worthy cause.

Masterminded and DMed by the effervescent Anjali Bhimani (known for her roles in Critical Role and Desi Quest), this canine caper brought together a who’s who of the gaming and entertainment world. Matthew Mercer and Ashley Johnson of Critical Role fame, alongside Aabria Iyengar (Dimension 20 and Critical Role), Maggie Robertson (Baldur’s Gate 3), and Emily Swallow from The Mandalorian, stepped into the paw prints of their loyal companions for an adventure that was equal parts heartwarming and hilarious.

I wanted to come up with puzzles and traps that dogs might face in real life,Bhimani barked—er, remarked, “like opening a door without having any thumbs.” This blend of real-world canine challenges and fantasy role-playing created an experience that kept viewers glued to their screens and donors reaching for their wallets.

But The Puppy Roll wasn’t just about laughs and lint rollers. At its core, this event was a fundraiser for Petco Love, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of pets and their human companions. From supporting adoption centers to reuniting lost pets with their families, Petco Love has been wagging tails and warming hearts for over 25 years.

In a clever twist that would make even the wiliest of wizards nod in approval, Bhimani incorporated photos of shelter dogs as NPC portraits during the game. This ingenious move showcased adoptable pups to a captive audience. Who could resist adopting the mysterious mutt guarding the dungeon door or the shadowy shepherd offering the next quest?

The excitement leading up to the event was palpable, with fans donating to unlock special items, spells, and even “insPAWration” (groan-worthy pun intended) to aid the furry adventurers. Jonathan Graziano, author of the viral sensation “Noodle & The No Bones Day,” joined Bhimani to add an extra dose of canine charisma to the proceedings.

As the dust settled and the last treat was claimed, The Puppy Roll emerged victorious, surpassing their impressive goal of $10,000 for Petco Love, raising over $30,000!

Just the best night for the best cause with the best people. Thanks to everyone who made #thepuppyroll a huge success so we could show @petcolove the support they deserve!” – Anjali Bhimani

This successful blend of gaming, charity, and puppy love begs the question: Could we be seeing more animal-themed RPG events in the future? Will cats demand equal time in the spotlight? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for certain—The Puppy Roll has set the bar (and the stick) high for feel-good gaming events.

So, whether you’re a die-hard D&D enthusiast, an animal lover, or just someone who enjoys watching celebrities pretend to be dogs (no judgment here), remember that sometimes the greatest adventures come with wagging tails and wet noses. And who knows? The next time you roll for initiative, you might just be inspired to visit your local animal shelter. After all, every dog deserves its day—even if that day involves battling dragons and solving thumbless puzzles.
